Your Outlander experience begins with a hotel pick-up in central Edinburgh. Meet your guide, settle into your Mercedes, and head out of the city as we trace the footsteps of Jamie and Claire through Scotland’s most atmospheric filming locations.
Our first stop is Midhope Castle, better known as Lallybroch, Jamie Fraser’s family home. Walking through the quiet courtyard and standing beneath the famous archway feels instantly familiar, and while the interior isn’t accessible, the exterior is one of the most photographed Outlander spots in Scotland. We then continue to Blackness Castle, a formidable 15th-century fortress on the Firth of Forth that doubled as Fort William in the series. Explore the towers, ramparts, and courtyards while your guide points out the exact areas used on screen. Next is Linlithgow Palace, the hauntingly beautiful ruin that became Wentworth Prison, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots and one of the most intense locations in the show. There’s usually time here for a comfort break and light lunch.
Leaving Linlithgow, we enjoy a scenic drive through central Scotland with views of Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument, before arriving at Doune Castle — instantly recognisable as Castle Leoch, home of Colum MacKenzie. The great hall, courtyard, and tower bring back scenes from the early series, and fans may also recognise it from Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Game of Thrones. Our final stop is Culross, the beautifully preserved village used as Cranesmuir throughout the show. The Mercat Cross, ochre-washed houses, and Palace gardens (Claire’s herb garden) all appear on screen. After a full day exploring filming locations and the real history behind them, we return you to your Edinburgh accommodation.
