Culross – Cranesmuir

Culross is one of the most enchanting places we visit on our Outlander tour — a perfectly preserved 17th-century village where time seems to slow down and history lingers around every corner. Its ochre-washed houses, cobbled lanes and traditional Mercat Cross create a setting that feels instantly familiar to Outlander fans, as the village appears throughout the series as Cranesmuir, home to Geillis Duncan.

Many key scenes were filmed right in the heart of Culross, including the dramatic moments around the Mercat Cross and in the narrow streets surrounding it. Culross Palace and its beautifully reconstructed 17th-century gardens stood in for Claire’s herb garden, one of the most recognisable locations from the early episodes. Walking these paths today, it’s easy to picture Claire gathering plants or speaking with villagers against the backdrop of the ochre palace walls.

Beyond its screen appearances, Culross is one of Scotland’s best-preserved historic burghs, offering a rare glimpse into what a Fife trading town looked like centuries ago. The village’s quiet charm, warm colours and coastal views make it a favourite stop even for those who haven’t seen Outlander. It’s the kind of place where a gentle wander, an afternoon coffee or a few minutes soaking in the atmosphere becomes a highlight of the day.
