Blackness Castle – Fort William

Blackness Castle is one of the most dramatic filming locations on our Outlander tour, instantly recognisable as Fort William, the dark and imposing stronghold where some of the series’ most intense scenes take place. Known as “the ship that never sailed” because of its striking, ship-like shape jutting into the Firth of Forth, the castle’s walls, towers and narrow passageways create an atmosphere that perfectly suits the tension of the story.

Walking through the castle grounds feels like stepping straight onto the Outlander set. The central courtyard, the sea-battered ramparts and the foreboding inner chambers all appear in the series, particularly during the emotional and heart-wrenching moments involving Jamie and Captain Jack Randall. The real castle is just as powerful as it is on screen — rugged, weathered and full of character.

Despite its dramatic appearance, the location itself is beautiful, offering sweeping views across the water towards Fife. This contrast between harsh stone and peaceful coastline makes Blackness a memorable place to visit, not only for Outlander fans but for anyone with an eye for Scotland’s medieval past.
