The Hogwarts Express

Private Guided Tour from Edinburgh

Trace the path of Scotland’s most iconic railway and discover the Highlands as they unfold in all their natural beauty. This tour’s highlight is the legendary Jacobite Steam Train, instantly recognisable as the Hogwarts Express. But there’s so much more to discover. As you travel through the heart of the Highlands, the scenery changes at every turn: From the still, deep waters of Loch Ness to the sweeping mountain passes and the wild charm of the west coast. Your guide tailors the day to your interests, sharing hidden viewpoints, historic landmarks, and peaceful spots that are often missed by larger groups.

Your own private Hogwarts Express

Your day begins with an early departure from Edinburgh, heading northwest and crossing the iconic Forth Bridges, a trio of engineering masterpieces spanning three centuries. Continuing north through the Cairngorms National Park, where wide open moorlands and mountain backdrops dominate the view, we pass Dalwhinnie, Scotland’s highest village, before dropping down toward Spean Bridge. The landscape shifts as we turn west toward the coast, mountains close in, and anticipation builds as we approach one of Scotland’s most famous railway scenes.

Arriving at the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct, we walk to the classic viewpoint overlooking its sweeping curve. Here, time and season dependent, you may witness the Jacobite Steam Train crossing the arches — instantly recognisable as the Hogwarts Express from the Harry Potter films. Few moments in Scotland feel more cinematic. After soaking up the magic, we continue to Fort William for lunch, nestled beneath Ben Nevis. Leaving Fort William, we follow the scenic shoreline of Loch Linnhe before journeying south through the Great Glen, stopping at Glencoe, where the towering Three Sisters ridges create one of the most dramatic landscapes in Scotland.

Continuing south, we pause at atmospheric Loch Tulla before heading to Killin to visit the Falls of Dochart, where the river tumbles through the heart of the village. Our final Highland stretch takes us through Callander before stopping at Doune Castle, famous for both Scottish history and its film appearances. If time allows, we finish with an optional stop at Deanston Distillery before returning to Edinburgh in the evening.
